If there was ever a more tried and tested conversation starter when you don’t really have much else to say it’s got to be the weather. Yeah? Let’s talk about the weather.
How weird is it? The weather I mean.
I woke up this morning and felt a distinct sense of Spring in the air. Granted, my reverse cycle air con was pumping at a comfortable 18 degrees C and I did note a particularly heavy frost outside. But that’s beside the point.
By 8 am the sun was belting out it’s rays like nobody’s business and already you could see it was going to be a cracker of a day. And it’s the middle of August!
In the last couple of years, Spring seems to have been so fleeting in my neck of the woods. We’ll be lucky if we get maybe a couple of weeks of pleasantly warm weather and them boom, it’s hot. So these beautiful days have got me wondering, is this it now? Do I need to shift my mindset from Winter to Spring? Put the slow cooker away and break out the salads? Rearrange my wardrobe and bring the cossies out? Tend to my grooming in the nether regions?
I went walking in a singlet top yesterday afternoon and I survived. That is saying something for a cold fish like me. Earlier in the day I did see a fellow netball Mum in a skimpy little summer top which I thought was a bit ambitious. It wasn’t yet lunch time and still a bit cool for my liking although I admired her enthusiasm. I eyed her suspiciously for signs of discomfort and yes, just as I suspected. There were goosebumps. Lots of goosebumps. I nodded knowingly to myself (kind of like Maxwell Smart….you know…smug). I think she might have jumped the gun. It’s a difficult period you see and we’re all struggling with it. What do I wear? It looks like Spring. It feels like Spring. But it’s not Spring! It’s so easy to get caught out. We would all do well to hedge our bets and pack a cardi. At least until the Sprinter (Spring + Winter) period is behind us.
I saw a baby brown snake on my walk too. It was curled up on the side of the road. They don’t like Winter you know. And I did wonder whether I might get swooped by a magpie because I watched a few have a go at my mate Dusty the kelpie in our back yard a couple of days before! “Say what?” I thought to myself. ” It’s Winter guys! Come back in a couple of weeks!”
I took to the Internet to try to find out if it will get cold again before Spring is actually due (can you tell it’s messing with my head?) and learned that South Australia has recorded its highest August temp since 1946 and Perth the wettest on record since 1965. There were avalanches in the Victorian Alps last week. An avalanche. This is rare in Australia. And I can tell you it will rain the day I’m going to Agquip. Of course it will. But will it get cold again? I do not know. In spite of my sophisticated search terms “will it get cold again this year” I can tell you what is happening in SA, Perth and the Vic Alps but when it comes to answering the actual question? I’ve got nothin’.
I say we make the most of it anyway. Switch off the devices and get outside. Go for a walk. Ride a bike. Pack a picnic and head for the park. Or get out in the garden. My weeds are loving Sprinter too! As do my bulbs. I actually remembered to plant some bulbs this year and they are coming along beautifully. I can’t wait to see what I planted. Ha! It’s been so long. But I know there are jonquils. My Grandparents grew jonquils along the path to their front door and the sight of jonquils always makes me smile.
So what do you reckon? Is Spring here already?
Do you reckon it’ll get cold again?
